
Flurries had been traveling Friday morning in Des Moines and temperatures were being in the mid-30s, although it felt colder than that thanks to sturdy, gusty winds.
It is this season’s 1st bit of snow in central Iowa, which should not get much more than a dusting Friday right before temps warm back up into the 40s around the weekend.
Is it strange for Des Moines to get its initially snow this late?
Not seriously.
Last calendar year the city’s first measurable snowfall arrived on Oct. 18 when 1.8 inch fell. The future day 9 inches fell in parts of the metro space when a snow squall strike. But storms like that are outliers.

Des Moines’ earliest event of a trace of snow transpired on Sept. 26, 1942, according to the National Weather Company, and the city’s hottest initial trace arrived on Dec. 6, 1948.
The metropolis acquired its earliest .1 inch of snow on Oct. 10, 1932. Its newest .1 inch of snow arrived on Dec. 20, 2004.
Des Moines obtained its earliest inch of snow on Oct. 18, 1991. In the winter of 1943-1944, Des Moines experienced to wait all the way until eventually Feb. 10, 1944, to get its 1st inch.
